How To Teach your Dog to Stay

Teaching your dog to stay is a valuable obedience command that can be useful in a variety of situations. It can also be a bit trickier to teach than some basic commands, as it requires your dog to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time. Here’s how to train your dog to stay:

  1. Begin by choosing a quiet, distraction-free space to work in. Have a few treats handy to reward your dog for good behavior.
  2. Start by having your dog sit or lie down, and then say the command “stay” in a firm yet reassuring tone.
  3. Hold your hand out in front of your dog with your palm facing them, as if you are physically blocking them from moving. This is called a “stay hand.”
  4. Slowly begin to take a step back, maintaining eye contact with your dog and using your stay hand to signal to them that they should remain in place.
  5. If your dog stays in position, say “yes” or use a clicker to mark the behavior and immediately give them a treat. If they break the stay and follow you, gently guide them back into position and try again.
  6. Practice this exercise a few times a day for a week or two, gradually increasing the distance you move away from your dog and the length of time they stay in position before giving them a treat.

With consistent practice and positive reinforcement, your dog will soon be staying on command like a pro! Remember to always use the same command and tone when training your dog to stay, as consistency is key in helping them understand what you want.
