How To Teach your Dog to Sit

Teaching your dog to sit is a basic obedience command that is easy to learn and can be a helpful tool in a variety of situations. Here’s how to train your dog to sit:

  1. Choose a quiet, distraction-free space to work in. Have a few treats handy to reward your dog for good behavior.
  2. Get your dog’s attention by calling their name or using a clicker.
  3. Hold a treat close to their nose and say the command “sit” in a firm yet reassuring tone.
  4. As your dog sniffs the treat, slowly move it upwards towards the back of their head. This will encourage them to sit down as they follow the treat with their nose.
  5. When their bottom touches the ground, say “yes” or use a clicker to mark the behavior and immediately give them the treat.
  6. Practice this exercise a few times a day for a week or two, gradually increasing the length of time your dog stays in the sitting position before giving them a treat.

With patience and consistent practice, your dog will soon be sitting on command like a pro! Remember to always use the same command and tone when training your dog to sit, as consistency is key in helping them understand what you want.
